From notabuddhist:

after 2010 turned out to be something of a personal bust, it was strange to find 2011 so accommodating. new job, new people, new attitude. or not. i’m not sure where this year went, but this list is a pretty accurate account of how it got there.

ray lamontagne - hannah
blitzen trapper - love the way you walk away

The long and short of it was I feel pretty lame with this list - its very unsurprising and to be quite honest only somewhat emotionally relevant. To wit, these are songs that earwormed into my life in 2011.

Call Your Girlfriend - Robyn

4th of July - Kelis

Indestructible - Robyn (although I think I might like the acoustic version better)

Cudi Zone - Kid Cudi

Home - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Rolling in the Deep - Adele

Super Bass - Nicki Minaj

Moves - New Pornographers

Countdown - Beyonce

Dilettante - St Vincent

Otis - Kanye and Jay-Z

I Don’t Want to Care Right Now - Lupe Fiasco

What 2011 Sounds Like

The autobiographical playlist of my year.

Download, if you’d like.

Concept credit to, of course, Miss Not Nadia.

This year was not the best. It continues, in its last remaining hours, to be not the best. But here is what it sounded like. Some of these songs sound like New York. Others, Paris. Others, London. Other, Philadelphia. One song is a mantra. Another made me speed 95 MPH thus earning me a speeding ticket. Life is stupid. Music is great. Enjoy.
Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
Jukebox the Ghost - Summer Sun
Robyn - Hang With Me
The Black Keys - Lonely Boy
The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger
Rihanna - We Found Love
Bob Dylan - Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right
Titus Andronicus - Richard II or Extraordinary Popular Dimensions and the Madness of Crowds (Responsible Hate Anthem)
Beirut - The Rip Tide
Rilo Kiley - A Better Son/Daughter
Fun. (ft. Janelle Monae) - We Are Young
The Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning
Of Monsters and Men - Little Talks
Joe Dassin - Les Champs-Elysees

What 2011 Sounds Like: an introduction

Hello, all! I conducted this meme in my own personal Tumblr last year via tags, but I have decided to move us to some fancier digs this year.

Thanksgiving is almost upon us, which means that December is nearly here, which means that we have officially entered the season of end-of-year list making. I enjoy lists. I will probably be making several of my own. Yet the lists that I always find the most insufferable are MUSIC LISTS. Everyone tries to out indie each other. It’s fun to place bets on where Watch the Throne will rank on Pitchfork’s (personal guess: #8?). For me, these lists tend to miss the point because what always reminds me about a particular year is usually never exclusive to the things which were released between January and December. Maybe I picked up an old favorite. Maybe I finally got into a band I had been resisting for years. Maybe I went to one Girl Talk show and then this Tumblr was born (HIGH FIVE).

So like this post, reblog this post to share it with your friends, follow this Tumblr, and start thinking about what 2011 has sounded like to you. Then submit your post to me sometime before the end of the year. Hopefully tons of you will participate and we’ll have music all December! Mine will be the first, up after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

I think we can make this a good one this year, Tumblr.

Sincerely,
Not Nadia
